We just drew a few quick breaths, it seems, since the London Design Festival 2017 with all its innovations, fun and crazy stuff and a whole lot of new trends, influences, and immersion into the design and art world. Full of new ideas and energy, we are now ready, together with our media partner Blueprint Magazine, for our next Design Forum in London.In the evening of 3 October 2017, an outstanding line-up of speakers will present and debate the use of color in architecture and interior design at the Design Museum in London. They will discuss the personal meaning of color and how it influences and changes their work.The views on the use of color may range on the whole spectrum from heavy use to no use at all. The speakers defend their opinions and join a panel, moderated by Blueprint Magazine editor Johnny Tucker, to discuss some common grounds.The speakers of the forum on “Color in architecture and interior design” are: Sir Terry Farrell, Founder of Farrell’s, Andy Groarke, Co-Founder of Carmody Groarke, John McElgunn, Partner of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Antoni Malinowski, artist/color consultant for Haworth Thompkins/Architectural Association Saturated Space co-founder, and our own Mark Bickerstaffe, director of new product development EMEA and ASPAC.
Andy Groarke, Co-director, founded Carmody Groarke together with Kevin Carmody in 2006. He has over 20 years’ experience as an architect. He has led the development of numerous award-winning projects, including the 7 July Memorial, Maggie’s Merseyside at Clatterbridge and Studio East Dining.
Antoni Malinowski, artist/color consultant and Architectural Association Saturated Space co-founder, researches the dynamic relationship between pictorial and architectural spaces. Antoni has collaborated with celebrated architects on permanent large-scale interventions in architecture. In 2012 he initiated the Saturated Space AA research cluster devoted to color/space interactions.
John McElgunn, partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP), has worked at RSHP for over a decade and is centrally involved in the company’s bids for new work. In 2014, he and his team completed all stages of the British Museum World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre.
Sir Terry Farrell, principal of Farrells, was awarded the Royal Town Planning Institute Gold Medal in 2017. Looking back on 50 years in the professions, he has become one of the world’s most influential architects, planners and urban designers. Terry’s projects include many award-winning buildings and masterplans, amongst them the Embankment Place and The Home Office Headquarters.
Mark Bickerstaffe, our director of New Product Development globally for Kitchen & Bath, has led the global expansion of design across Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific. With a background in industrial design and lots of experience in various industries, Mark approaches color from different angles to achieve the optimal results in new designs.
Johnny Tucker is the Blueprint Magazine editor, a journalist, design historian and professional photographer. Before starting to edit Blueprint Magazine six years ago, he had relaunched FX magazine and was Design Week’s news editor. Currently, Johnny also serves on the Hackney Design Review Panel to consult on new architecture.
After the presentations and the panel discussions, the audience will have the opportunity to ask their own colorful questions.
