Casa Décor is the only organization in Europe to put on events like the Casa Décor in Madrid, Spain – finding a historic building and in the heart of a city and inviting designers, architects, and companies to collaborate and work together to show their best and outstanding work. The 2018 Casa Décor is the 53rd edition and has been running for the past 25 years. For architects and designers, it is an important exhibition of architecture style, trends, design, art, interior, and decoration – quite unique in Europe. The building in the neighborhood of Chamberi at Francisco de Rojas 2 street in Madrid, Spain, is an unbeatable location for this year’s Casa Décor that takes place from 15 February to 25 March 2018.On 3,100 square meters close to 100 designers and architects and 107 companies from different corners of the country – Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Malaga, Murcia, Cordoba, Granada, and Toledo – and the world came together to renovate, refurbish and decorate 67 spaces on four floors. The final product of this tremendous work is on display for 40 days. The building was constructed between 1900 and 1903 by the Catalan architect Antonio Farres Aymerich. It has 55 meters of façade and 68 balconies that serve perfectly to let light into the rooms on every level. It is almost like a well-preserved scaffold of Catalan modernism that provided a perfect empty canvas for designers to let their creativity and skill take free reign. The result is an explosion of talent that created extraordinary spaces combining existing elements and modern design. Visitors experience a unique and sensory firework walking through the house that showcases the designers’ best work. The designs cover lots of different styles and even periods including retro-futuristic to Mid Century style and Art Deco. In terms of colors, it is a bit more unified. They center on pastel tones such as pink and green, turquoise, light orange, grey, and ochre. The experts from Akzo Nobel made sure that everyone hit exactly the right hues on the walls with their paint. An overarching, continued tendency in decorations and patterns is ‘tropical paradise’ that can be seen throughout the building. It is a somewhat familiar sight for visitors who have also been to the KIPS Bay Decorator Showhouse in New York City in 2017. Exotic flora and fauna are depicted on furniture, lamps, wallpapers and paintings, and porcelain. The common thread through the designs is a creation of a micro-cosmos within the home blending living spaces, bedroom, bathroom, and more. The Spanish Jacob Delafon team worked with two designers: Manuel Espejo and Virginia Sanchez. The collaboration was a great opportunity to present new products and collections.Manuel Espejo is a brand ambassador for Jacob Delafon and was the winner of the Best Project Casa Décor in 2015. He created a space that was inspired by the great architects and designers of the 1950s. The Nouvelle Vague Collection forms part of the ‘Là où commence l’élégance’ with minimalist curves, pure lines, and functional and intelligent lighting. The play with black accents in the innovative material of the ‘Surface’ shower and the PVD Titanium Finish of the ‘Composed’ faucet, Manuel created an interesting and intriguing room.Virginia Sanchez creation is a clear homage to Coco Chanel. The public bath that includes ‘Delta Pure’ and ‘Vox Signature’ is an elegant, chic room with a sophistication that is unparalleled. It contrasts black and white beautifully and interestingly. She expresses her creativity in a way to interpret modern life, lifestyle trends, and sensory experiences.Apart from Jacob Delafon many other companies collaborated with the interior designers. In this year’s project, 40% of the designers were new to Casa Décor. Samsung worked with Guille Garcia-Hoz and Beatriz Silveira to create the Samsung Club – a bar and restaurant – within the premises. The presence of technology companies reaffirmed the fact that in design tradition, aesthetics, and technology go hand-in-hand. Modern technology systems are artfully integrated with traditional furniture and materials.Casa Décor continues to be open through 25 March 2018. The design world awaits with anticipation the jury’s decisions on ‘Best project’, ‘Best original design’, and for the first time this year ‘Best company design’.
