2019 is predicted to be another record year in Australia’s hotel industry with hotels continuing to be built, purchased, branded, and managed. Based on an insightful session at the Australian Hotel Industry Conference and Exhibition (AHICE) on May 1 and 2, 2019, Australia is looking at strong hotel investments and into becoming one of the top hotel industries in the Asia Pacific Region.
The 10th anniversary of the AHICE was hosted and presented by HM Magazine at the five-star luxury hotel, Grand Hyatt Melbourne. This year, the annual conference was even more interesting than the last year with the largest attendance to date that included key persons from global hotels and related industries. Developers, builders, real estate investors, and designers from around the world gathered for thought-provoking speeches, presentations, discussions, and high-powered networking.
When people think of Australia and tourism, they think kangaroos, surfing, great wines, and stunning sceneries. One of the AHICE panel discussions revolved around these current tourism trends and whether they matched general perceptions. Another focus, and maybe not so well known, was Australia’s nightlife.
Industry leaders have set their minds on re-energizing Australia’s nightlife with more stunning events, exciting entertainment, and new hospitality concepts to become a go-to destination for locals and guests.
A further trend, mentioned by many of the luxury hotel brand representatives of IHG, Accor, Marriott, and Hyatt, is the rise of boutique hotels. They believe that smaller properties offer more flexibility in design and services both for their guests and hotel developers. The speakers emphasized that global trends are indeed applied in the Australian context: localism, community, individualism, art, and sustainability.
The boutique hotel trend allows developers to design and complement the local hospitality landscape, with street art, edgy designs and a focus on restaurants and bars using local produce and organic ingredients. This has contributed to a massive expansion in Australia’s hotel industry in cities such as Perth, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, and Melbourne in the last few years. These small hotels have also significantly changed the hotel landscapes there and made them more lively and attractive.
