The retailers in the interior decoration industry are experiencing the digital transformation first hand. Although the trade is changing completely, Ambiente 2019 is the physical gathering place for decoration professionals to meet and learn about the latest trends.

More than 4,450 exhibitors from 92 countries convene from February 8 to 12, 2019, at Frankfurt Messe in Frankfurt, Germany, for the world’s leading consumer goods trade fair. This year’s partner country is India and it is represented strongly. Just to mention a few: on one of the exhibition days, Bollywood star and singer Kanika Kapoor, who is also going to be a new coach for young talents on Voice India series, is visiting the show and is checking out textiles that she might integrate into her fashion label products.

Ayush Kasliwal presents a special exhibition ‘Hand Make’ highlighting the importance of traditional craftsmanship in India and Sunil Sethi, president of the Fashion Design Council of India, presents ‘Stepwells’ demonstrating handmade products and production methods in an interactive environment.

As every year, a series of award ceremonies are lined up for the Ambiente 2019. The German Design Award is long-awaited on February 8 where products will be selected, the Kitchen Innovation Award and the Plagiarius anti-award for product piracy are always well-attended and quite popular. For the first time, the Dineus Award will be handed out for outstanding products and projects in dining culture. More to come in this area.

Trendsetters were as busy as at Heimtextil, Domotex, IMM Cologne, and IDS Toronto, to tease out the latest trends.

Strong tendencies to incorporate nature and natural feelings are also predicted at Ambiente 2019. Materials such as wood, leather, velvet, velour, porcelain, glass, textiles, silk, hemp, and linen are dominant this year.

On the one hand, consumers are seeking a calm, recluse place from the busy world outside their home, and on the other, they strive for self-expression and individuality through bold colors and unorthodox patterns and motifs. Personalization is king and queen at the same time.

Exhibitors also focus on presenting outstanding craftsmanship, expertly crafted products with finishes, colors, and proportions that follow pure lines and are refined. The overall sustainable awareness and the push for recycling and reuse is felt everywhere on the exhibition floor.

The business model in the consumer goods industry is changing towards digital. Many marketplaces are now available on the web and many businesses are consolidated. The online platform ‘nextrade’, a digital B2B marketplace, offers industry professionals the full spectrum of interior decoration beyond the Ambiente 2019 fair days. It’s a place to network, directly order products, and learn about supplementary product ranges.
