Bangkok has long been considered just another Asian city, a place to have fun and to go to a good party. Lately, it has become a strong business hub with incredible architecture e.g. Mahanakorn and hip bars and restaurants. Additionally – and traditionally – Bangkok is an incredibly creative and vibrant metropolis. Some of the best TV advertising spot productions in Asia are done in the 12-million people city. So, it comes as a small surprise that Bangkok has its own Bangkok Design Week. During 27 January to 4 February 2018, the city showcases six creative districts such as Charoen Krung, Khlong San, 22 Karakadakhum Circle, Rama 1, and Sukhumvit Street around Phrom Phong and Ekkamai. The extensive program under the theme ‘the NEW-ist Vibes’ that was organized by the Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC) and the Office of the Prime Minister cover three subjects City & Living, Well-Being & Gastronomy, and Creative Business. The activities range from creative district projects, symposiums and talks, creative programs, business programs, and creatives markets. Of particular interest are the architect tours covering the renovation of the Grand Postal Building and other historic buildings in the area, the creative river cruise tour on the Chao Phraya River highlighting the historic buildings of Eastern and Western architectural designs, and the Moon Walk tour where visitors can learn about the House No. 1, Assumption Church, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and the East Asiatic Company. There is certainly something interesting to discover and be inspired by for designers, artists, thinkers, entrepreneurs, and producers. The program and excellent organization is a further testament that Bangkok will be put on the circuit of the global Design Weeks and prepares the city for the aspiration to become World Design Captial in 2022.
