As every year, we were giddy with anticipation about the opening of Casa Décor Madrid that opened its doors on 24 January 2019. The organizers added another week on the whole duration to the premier interior design happening to accommodate all concerned and add benefits for all at this unique design event in Spain.
Visitors have an additional week to tour the house and get insights of the latest design trends, designers can show their latest design longer, and manufacturers can use the additional time to network with industry professionals in a real-life environment where their products are shown beautifully.
The 54th edition of Casa Décor Madrid 2019 is taking over the corner building at Nunez de Balboa 86 in the center of Madrid. For the past 27 years, the organizers have found original, one-of-a-kind buildings within the city as the shell for designers’ creativity and as a canvas to paint and construct the latest interior design trends in Spain and Europe on. Literally.
This year’s building in Barrio Salamanca, an octagonal city grid quarter, was built in 1925 and is surrounded by notable places such as Juan March palace and the Embassy of Italy that is the former palace of the Marquis of Amboage. This neighborhood contributed and served as inspiration for some urban city planning in Paris, New York, and London.
Sevillan architect Carlos Maria de Castro built a three-story structure with internal courtyards, a prominent avant-garde façade for its time, and deco elements with bricks and customized ironwork on the balconies that made this building stand out.
The Corner Group that is the patron of Casa Décor Madrid 2019 provided the building that is up for complete restoration and reconstruction only maintaining the façade and the staircase. Impar Groupo will manage the transformation after the design event and will add three floors to the existing building but not exceeding the height of the neighboring buildings. Once completed, Nunez de Balboa 86 will comprise 15 luxury apartments.
Before this all happens, more than 100 interior designers, decorators, and interior architects and at least as many manufacturers have taken over the property to turn it into a magnificent interior design project. They showcase trends, nuances, fads, whims, and all that is talked about in the interior design space at the moment.
The collaborative effort that brought this project to life is astounding and the big opening event at the AC Hotels Marriott relaxing space in the building proved that the whole industry was just waiting for its kick-off.
