It is with great anticipation that the design community in Dubai and the Middle East awaits the opening of the Dubai Design Week on 12 November 2018. The program looks amazing and overwhelmingly large with more than 230 events going on within the four days. Luckily, the new app that is available for the first time will be of help to schedule and organize visitors’ days and make sure that no important events are missed. For us, Dubai Design Week is a big happening not just because it is a big thing in the region. As a design, art, and innovation focused company, we are interested to learn about trends and novelties that are brought to and shown in Dubai, and we love to get up close and personal with all that is going on. The best way to do this is to become a Dubai Design Week partner. This is exactly what we did. We are immensely proud of being a Dubai Design Week partner and believe that this great platform to showcase Dubai’s and the Middle East’s creative talents presents a unique opportunity for Kohler Company to demonstrate our forward-thinking ideals. On 14 November, three unique events tackle design ideas from different perspectives of design. They offer architects and designers various points of views of our talents, capabilities, and connections to the local and global markets. Kicking-off the afternoon, a laid-back conversation among architects and designers called KOHLER ChitChats gathers the community. Under the theme ‘Wanderlust’ that was inspired by the successful Pecha Kucha event in our KOHLER Experience Center in New York City last May, four well-known architects and designers from the Middle East region are taking up the challenge. They convey their travel experiences that influenced their design thinking and the designs within a twenty-second-time limit per slide. They continue the conversation that fascinated a large audience in New York during ICFF. With a total of twenty slides, the fast-talking speakers share new ideas and design sparks with the design enthusiasts in the audience. The leisurely event with drinks and finger foods encourages interaction from the audience, the speakers, and our team. The KOHLER Design Forum that follows is the next event in the worldwide series of the 2018 KOHLER design forums that are touring under the theme ‘All Things Connected’. Dubai is the next one after Toronto, London, and Singapore. Sania Abbas of IBM Watson Internet of Things, Paul Priestman of PriestmanGoode, Giovanni De Niederhäusern of Carlo Ratti Associati, and our vice-president of Industrial Design Richard Kong share insights of the integration of design and technology into our daily lives, the use of smart technology in a people-centric way, and the possibilities of artificial intelligence. In the ensuing panel discussion led by Monocle’s senior editor Robert Bound, the speakers discuss more details and take questions from the audience to continue the conversation. At five o’clock, Theresa Millard, a certified biomimicry expert and the head of the KOHLER WasteLAB in Kohler, Wisconsin, invites an engaged audience to an intense workshop about industrial wastes. She will demonstrate with hands-on activities how non-toxic industrial wastes that usually are destined for the landfills can be transformed into new, beautiful products that will soon be available in the market.
