While the Salone del Mobile at the fairgrounds focuses on the products and the brands themselves, the parallel event Fuorisalone 2019 that takes place throughout the city of Milan, Italy, captures the visitors’ attention with its immersive installations and exhibitions.
This year’s unofficial theme is certainly experiential sensations. Many of the 400 events have an element of light and sound within them. It is not possible to test all there is within the short week but a few of the installations stood out. The Japanese brands and their collaborators are among of the most creative.
At Ventura Centrale under the train station, the brand DNP debuts with a fascinating exhibition of patterns, light, technology, and more. Their innovative design center developed decorative glass panels on which patterns were printed repeatedly. The panels are illuminated in different colors that change while watching the installation.
In the same vault, the company set up a ‘patterns’ room in black and white. It frequently changes from one shape to another and keeps watchers enthralled in the experience.
A few doors down, the bare walls of the catacombs reflect the shadows of hundreds of icicles hung on a line in the center of the room. After careful examination, one will notice that the material that icicles are made of is resin. Through an LED light source, the resin is changing its form and it almost seems like nature’s ice-cold phenomenon, but it is all based on science and new technology.
In Tortona, a number of brands present immersive experiences. One of them is Toyota Boshoku. The rather small and almost hidden installation in a side alley off the main street tells the story of chairs in motion – in cars, buses, planes – and demonstrates the use of new material.
The fuzzy fabric changes color when touched. The reaction is caused by the tester’s body temperature and turns it white. The material is at the basis the same as is used to make kimonos but is enhanced with an artificial fiber to make it more durable, flexible, and chameleon-like.
The Fuorisalone 2019 has plenty to offer for every design-interested person. The latest technology, innovation, and hidden gems wait to be uncovered.
