We had a chance to sit down with Korine Kruger and Georgina Cox from Studium recently to talk about Global Design Trends and more specifically design trends in South Africa.
Their multi-disciplinary design studio that they founded together with Korine’s sister Sanet Stegmann in 2015 is a wonderful platform for collaboration. Collaboration in the broader sense also seems to be the architect’s, interior architect/product designer’s and interior designer’s take on design trends.
They work with artists, designers, architects to create spaces that are rather complimenting the environment than competing with it. In South Africa, the natural environment is a very strong influence on design styles and very visible in contemporary design including furniture, art and ceramics. The culture is so rich in hand craftsmanship that it is natural to integrate these elements in modern designs.
The play between the contemporary designs and the environment are enhanced by the use of color, lots of them, and the focus on bringing intricacies of the surroundings into the open.
Studium has been known for designing spaces at art exhibitions, booths and more. Recently, they designed the Heritage Apartment at the Design Joburg.
