We had a quick chat with one of the winners of the recent KOHLER Bold Design Awards 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Rivia Meidiana, Senior Designer at Genius Loci expressed her and the team’s joy over winning the award in the Living Condo and Apartment – Interior Design – category for Keraton Residence in Jakarta.
The empty shell Keraton Residence apartment was an ideal playing field for the interior designers to express an American Park Avenue classic style coupled with playful French design influences. The result is an unexpected, surprisingly contemporary space.
As Rivia mentioned in the interview, the design thinking was to create an area that combines the concept of public and private spaces. The master bedroom and bathroom are located on the right-hand side of the apartment, while the children’s bedrooms and the kitchen are placed on the left. In the center, the public areas to entertain and for communal living are an open-plan concept in a casual modern American style.
The most stunning element of the apartment is the entrance. The apartment can be accessed by a private elevator and upon opening its doors, guests find themselves in a world of black and white patterned floors with historic references, eucalyptuses wood-paneled walls and in front of a massive door with mother of pearl inlays. A stately welcome for any visitor.
Throughout the apartment, the playful tension between the clean, somber American contemporary style and the playful French twist is apparent. Deeper into the space, timber flooring in royal Chantilly style gives way to light colored marble in the living room.
The formal and elegant Baker furniture is offset with gold, bronze, and dark mahogany accents throughout to add to the sensory experience and underlines the stately and modern luxurious design vocabulary. De Gournay screen panels and wall covering (in the powder room) and warm, emerald green furniture colors enhance the experience.
Alex Bayusaputro, Rivia, and their team invested a lot of time and efforts and perseverance into making this amazing project come alive in 2018. For future participants of the KOHLER Bold Design Awards, they recommend doing the same.
