We are not missing a beat in the roll-out of the KOHLER Design Forums 2019. The first African KOHLER Design Forum Johannesburg on May 24, 2019, is going to be part of Design Joburg and a world-class speaker program.

Meet the protagonists of the first KOHLER Design Forum Johannesburg: Yinka Ilori, Mardre Meyer, Suzanne Watts, and Salil Sadanandan.

Yinka Ilori, creative director and founder, who explores the richness of storytelling in connection with Experiential Luxury is the winner of Elle Decoration’s British Design Awards 2019, a tribute to this artist and designer’s dedication to representing his Nigerian heritage and his subsequent body of bold work. Recognized for his series of vintage chairs, constructed from parts of discarded furniture, Yinka has become an icon of the African diaspora whose work has evolved to include installations, too. He was born in London and is of Nigerian descent that let him uses it as a compass for his work. This serves to wave African narrative into newfound form. In his presentation at the KOHLER Design Forum his dimension of Experimental Luxury takes on a romantic twist.   

Mardre Meyer, creative director of Source IBA, who will challenge guests to explore the contemporary expressions of luxury in hospitality and its dimensions of Experiential Luxury. As creative director, he ensures that the integrity of the approved concepts is upheld and developed to its maximum. He is involved in all aspects of a project starting from initial concept narrative, through design development including FF&E and finishes. Mardre has worked on projects ranging from large-scale hospitality developments through boutique work environments to affordable housing schemes. As a studio, Source IBA is passionate about establishing contemporary African design as an equal player on the global stage rather than a curiosity.

Suzanne Watts, owner of Studio 62 Ltd, shares here insights of the entire spectrum of Experiential Luxury in hospitality and travel at the event. She is a Canadian-born interior designer who has lived and worked for most of her life in Central and Eastern Africa. Having returned to Kenya after university in the late 1980s, Suzanne has built a reputable company, Studio 62 Limited, and became a leading interior design firm within the region specializing in hospitality interior design. Recently, Studio 62 has received the African Business Excellence Award for Best Interior Design Consultancy 2019 – Kenya and the Award for Distinction in Hospitality Interior 2019.

The fast-paced KOHLER Design Forum Johannesburg on Friday afternoon will set the stage for the presentations and panels to follow. After short, to-the-point presentations, speakers join Sarah Buitendach, editor of Business Day Wanted and forum moderator, on stage for a lively panel discussion. Guests are able to interact directly with the speakers during the panel or at the ensuing cocktail and networking session.
