Finally the day – 21 May 2018 – came that the first-ever Kohler Pecha Kucha NYC hit New York’s Flatiron district. 135 architects, designers, fashion lovers, bloggers, and media experts chose to spend the evening at the Kohler Experience Center (KEC) in New York City rather than at one of the flashy events during ICFF and NYCxDesign throughout the city. Larry Yuen, president K&B Group, and Brittany Chevalier of LUXE Interiors introduced the five brave presenters who rose to the challenge of condensing their ‘Wanderlust’ experiences and how these have influenced their design processes into 20 slides. To raise the stakes, even more, the Pecha Kucha format only allows the speakers to talk about each slide for 20 seconds. A definite high bar was set to convey the essence of each image as concisely and succinctly as possible. Andre Kikoski, Mark Zeff, Campion Platt, Gary Jay Paul, and Stephen Brockman did an amazing job and took the audience on a journey.
The topic ‘Wanderlust’ lends itself perfectly to the design community as inspiration often comes when on the road or traveling unknown grounds. This inspiration is the spark for new, innovative projects and undertakings. The speakers who are all well-known architects and designers in New York City could not agree more that their incessant ‘Wanderlust’ has changed their lives and influenced design directions through many facets.
The idea behind Pecha Kucha is not new to Kohler Company. Teams around the world have held private Pecha Kucha events in India, Thailand, Australia, Singapore etc. showing great passion for creative arts and a commitment to the community to share new ideas. For this event in New York City, the Kohler team has partnered with the Pecha Kucha organization.
The enthusiastic audience cheered on the presenters and enjoyed an evening of inspiring, thought-provoking conversations, fun meet-ups with friends and new acquaintances, and a sip or two of bubbly and crunching on some nibbles.
If you missed the Kohler Pecha Kucha NYC, don’t despair: a new round of Pecha Kucha will soon be launched at the KEC LAX.
