100% Design South Africa, the leading design exhibition in South Africa, celebrated its fifth birthday between 8 and 12 August 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa. In collocation with Decorex Joburg, 100% Design South Africa attracted a record number of visitors to show the latest, most innovative, and trendiest designs and decors during the trade show in Hall 1 at the Gallagher Convention Centre. Inspiration designers and creators and design-interested people gathered to get the latest scoop on furniture, product, surface, material design for residential, commercial, hospitality, and retail spaces around the country and the continent. The timeless elegance and modern styles spoke also the panel of judges for the 100% Design South Africa 2018 Awards. On 8 August 2018, ten busy people took time out of their even busier schedules to decide on the winners of eight design categories and the Designer of the Year. The jury comprised of editors, media representatives, designers, tastemakers, and influencers: Tiaan Nagel of House and Leisure, Ntombehle Shezi of Elle Decoration, Sumien Brink and Annemarie Meintjies of Visi, Leana Schoeman of the Sunday Times, Debbie Loots of Real Estate Life Magazine, Zanele Kumalo of Media24, industrial designer Richard Sparks, Aiwekhoe Iyahoen of Luxe Noir, and Daniel van der Merwe of PPC Imaginarium. With the help of Angus Campbell, head of the department of industrial design at the University of Johannesburg, as facilitator eight winners were chosen and recognized. Designer and artisan studio Houtlander received the Designer of the Year award for their design of the 100% Design Café at the curated exhibition show. Their hard work combined with an outstanding concept, quality, and design confirmed their position in the design world and convinced the judges. Other pioneering work was recognized for furniture, product, lighting, textile, surface, and stand designs. Ben Orkin snatched up the title of 100% talent for his ceramic creations and visions. The 2018 exhibition show was an overwhelming success for all participants, exhibitors, and visitors. Plans are in the making for the 2019 show. The dates will be communicated later.
