In Union City, TN, USA, 220 runners helped raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. At this Kohler sponsored event on the US Labor Day on 4 September 2017, 19 of the runners represented our shower door plant in Union City and helped accumulate a total of 100 kilometers for our common goal of 40,075 kilometers in the Run for Clarity challenge. This is the 4th year that Second Baptist Church organized a charity run for St. Jude Children’s Hospital helping children who suffer from life-threatening childhood illnesses. In the three previous years, a total of about USD 13,000 were raised. In 2017, it was almost USD 10,000. In mid-October, a team will visit St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis for a celebration and a tour of the hospital.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is unique in the world. The hospital opened in 1962 as a one-man operation to help change the course of childhood cancer research, find cures and treatments.
Today’s institution treats more than 7,500 patients each year. The doctors and nurses at St. Jude’s treat brain tumors, blood disorders, HIV/AIDS, leukemia and lymphomas, solid tumors, and perform bone marrow transplants. 75% of the cost for treatments are covered by public contributions, the rest by grants and funds. The families of the sick child never receive a bill. There are eight affiliate clinics providing similar services in other parts of the US.
