Chinese president Xi Jinping called again for upgrading toilets in rural and urban areas in China to boost domestic tourism and raise the standard of living.Since 2015, 3.03 billion USD have been invested in improving 68,000 toilets, 20% more than the initial target, in tourist destinations across the country.In addition to raising rural toilets to an acceptable hygiene level, the campaign also aims to give toilets in popular tourist areas a rating that is based on 58 criteria including ventilation, background music, and the provision of toilet paper.Between 2018 and 2020, a further 64,000 tourist area toilets will be renovated or built.
